Fireworks

The plan does not address fireworks. Nearest lying principles are that animals are sentient beings that shall live good lives and that freedom also means the right to physical safety. Based on these starting points, and without any commitment in the plan speaking for free private handling of pyrotechnics, support for the counter-proposal's ban outweighs.

The closest principle is society's fundamental responsibility for security and the right to a safe local environment, which leans toward restricting private individuals' handling of pyrotechnic goods. The election manifesto demands that animals live their lives free from suffering and stress and that animal suffering be minimised, and the party programme states that animals have the right to wellbeing. The party programme defends people's freedom from paternalism and states that the state shall avoid over-regulating people, and that everyone shall be able to decide over their own lives through their own free choices. A total ban for private individuals to handle firecrackers, rockets and fireworks is precisely such a general restriction of individuals' choices. The plan therefore speaks against the counter-proposal's demands.

The closest principle is that liberalism sets a clear boundary for public power and rejects detailed regulation of people's everyday lives, with respect for different ways of living. A general ban for private individuals goes further than that principle permits, although the plan's requirement for dignified animal husbandry responsibility pulls in the opposite direction.

The plan requires humanity to have a stewardship responsibility for animals: contact with animals shall as far as possible avoid stress, pain and injuries, and the responsibility includes wild animals as well. The counter-proposal's reasons - that pet animals die each year from terror - hit precisely this commitment. That the plan simultaneously urges politicians not to unnecessarily interfere makes the conclusion uncertain, but the animal welfare commitment is the more specific.

The closest lying principle is that measures shall be directed against illegal handling and criminality rather than against law-abiding citizens' legal possession, and that goals shall be reached through technology rather than through punishment of undesired ways of life. The plan also cherishes shared holidays and traditions. A general ban for private individuals therefore goes against the plan's line, even though the plan's animal welfare commitment pulls in the opposite direction.
