A fossil-free vehicle fleet

The plan wants to set firm frameworks for taking Sweden out of fossil dependence with an emissions budget and a transition programme all the way to emissions near zero, and a coordinated strategy for electrification of transport. A final date for new fossil-powered vehicles and support for conversion are precisely such firm frameworks. The plan requires that the transition happens immediately, not that it is deferred to a broader analysis.

The election manifesto's fundamental climate commitment is that Sweden shall become the world's first fossil-free welfare nation and that the pace of emission reductions must increase, with doubled charging stations and increased production of renewable fuels. Phasing out new fossil-fueled vehicles and supporting conversion to electricity and biogas is in line with that. The plan sets no end date and warns against burdening car-dependent households, which qualifies the support.

The plan chooses real climate taxes and measures coordinated primarily at EU level over bans and subsidies. A national end date for fossil fuels and conversion support is precisely the subsidy-driven policy the plan distances itself from; instead, electrification shall be accelerated and the blending of fossil-free fuels shall continue. The goal that fossil emissions must end is shared, but the counter-proposal's means are rejected.

The election manifesto carries most weight and requires sharply reduced petrol and diesel prices and that climate transition happens in a way that both works and is effective; an earlier end date for sales of fossil fuels goes against this, as does the fact that the car is a prerequisite for being able to live in all of Sweden. The counter-proposal requires an end date for sales of new fossil-powered vehicles and fossil fuels. The plan goes straight against this: the price of petrol and diesel should be lowered and the person who needs the car should be able to afford to drive it whether it runs on petrol or electricity. The transition happens in the plan through electrification and charging infrastructure, not through sales bans, and climate policy must not become expensive symbolic politics.
