Support for civil society

The plan is built on strong and independent social movements and wants to secure conditions that give civil society and public education great independence from the state. The counter-proposal's demand for tightened controls against organizations deemed to obstruct liberal democracy, with left-wing movements singled out, pulls in the opposite direction and risks precisely that independence. The plan also sees civil disobedience as a legitimate last resort democratic option.

The party programme rejects any form of terrorist act and organized violence and states that democracy is undermined when non-democratic groups spread hatred and frighten people into silence. The election manifesto wants to stop fraud and misuse of public funds. More effective rules and controls that prevent state subsidies from going to organizations that work against democracy thereby align with the plan, which at the same time values civil society's conditions.

The plan establishes that democracy shall be defended with democratic means and that crime and terrorism prevention shall not happen at the expense of human rights, while at the same time civil disobedience is given a value in democracy. The counter-proposal's broad control regime, where even the autonomous environment and animal rights activism are counted among the threats, therefore does not receive support in the plan. That the plan at the same time works forcefully against racism and fascism makes the conclusion uncertain.

The plan makes defence of liberal democracy a main priority and wants to specifically protect democratic institutions, which supports the requirement for more effective rules against public funds going to organisations that work against democracy. The party programme explicitly establishes that no tax funds shall go to activities that oppose fundamental democratic values, which is exactly what the counter-proposal demands more effective rules and controls for. The election manifesto states that much more must be done when organizations from extremist circles are financed by tax funds and wants to strengthen monitoring of grant-giving. The plan furthermore identifies the same extremist circles as a threat to democracy.
