Religious communities' security and safety work

The plan guarantees freedom of religion and lifts Sweden's commitment to protect and strengthen, among others, Jews' and Roma people's rights to identity and religion, and describes how excluding racism takes expression in assault, persecution and harassment. Long-term and ongoing security support instead of one-time grants follows from that protection of vulnerable faith communities shall be lasting. The plan wants to improve civil society's financing among other things through long-term government grants, which is precisely the transition from one-off grants to ongoing support that the counter-proposal requires. Faith communities are counted in the plan as part of civil society's core and the state has a responsibility to ensure freedom of religion. The plan simultaneously requires strengthened follow-up of grant allocation, which is a condition rather than an obstacle for the reform.

Religious freedom is according to the party programme a self-evident human right and a vital civil society with religious associations should be promoted by state and municipality. The election manifesto notes that Islamist extremists have decisive influence in certain areas, which makes associations' security a real issue. The plan explicitly commits to guarding the security of faith communities so that everyone can practice their faith without feeling threatened. Support that only provides one-off grants and does not reach the most vulnerable does not fulfill that commitment, so the counter-proposal's demands for reformed and long-term support align with the plan. The plan also wants to strengthen the Security Police's protective capacity and stop tax money going to extremists.

The plan's stated line on public support for faith communities is restrictive: mosques and other communities that work for extremism should not receive subsidies, and state support to segregating organizations should be stopped. The plan furthermore requires clear results for each public initiative and conditions support to civil society. A reformed, long-term ongoing subsidy flow to faith communities goes against the restrictive and conditioned stance.
