The election manifesto requires that asylum rights are never compromised and that only permanent residence permits are issued when asylum is granted, and calls temporary and conditional permits a form of psychological violence. The counter-proposal goes in exactly the opposite direction: asylum reception only in case of war in the neighboring region, reporting requirement for foreign travel, third-country agreements, and time-limited permits instead of permanent ones. The party programme states that Sweden shall offer a safe haven for people forced to flee and that immigration shall be generous and regulated, with shared EU responsibility for asylum matters. The counter-proposal in practice wants to take in asylum seekers only in case of war in the surrounding area and replace permanent residence with time-limited minimal solutions, which goes further than the plan's tightening. The election manifesto's message that the tightened line is firm is not sufficient to support such a far-reaching demand.

The election manifesto promises to defend asylum rights and the quota refugee system, that more families shall be able to reunite and that children fleeing shall receive permanent residence permits. The party programme describes the party as the most open on migration issues. A proposal that limits reception to wars in the nearby region and replaces permanent residence permits with five-year permits directly contradicts the plan.

The plan establishes that the right to asylum is a fundamental human right and that people fleeing war and persecution shall receive protection. Normally only accepting asylum seekers in case of war in the neighbouring region cuts straight into that right, as does replacing permanent residence for permanently settled residents with the EU law minimum. The plan instead wants to create safe and legal refugee pathways and a humane and rights-respecting asylum policy.

The election manifesto's requirement for strict migration pulls in the opposite direction, but does not go as far as the counter-proposal.

The plan explicitly requires that asylum legislation be adapted to the legal minimum level according to EU law, that a volume target on Nordic levels be introduced and that the number of asylum seekers decrease significantly. The counter-proposal's demands – reception mainly at war or crisis in the region, time-limited permits according to EU's minimum requirements and agreements with safe third countries – are the same line. The plan also wants to significantly increase the number of deportations through more readmission agreements.
